Rodents in Southland

Identifying the rodent tells us how to treat it.

🐀
Ship Rats (Black Rats)

Climbers — the ones in your ceiling and roof void. Nocturnal, agile, and the most common rat in Southland homes.

🐀
Norway Rats (Brown Rats)

Larger, ground-dwellers. Burrow under sheds, compost, and foundations. Common in rural Southland.

🐀
House Mice

Small but breed fast. One pair can become dozens in months. Found in kitchens, pantries, and wall cavities.

Signs of Rodents

🔊
Scratching in the ceiling

Scratching, scurrying, or gnawing sounds at night — rats and mice are nocturnal. The classic sign of rodents in the roof.

💩
Droppings

Small dark droppings in cupboards, behind appliances, or in the pantry. Mouse droppings are rice-sized; rat droppings larger.

🦷
Gnaw marks

Chewed food packaging, wires, wood, or plastic. Rodents gnaw constantly to keep their teeth down.

👃
Musty smell

A persistent musty or ammonia smell in enclosed spaces — rodent urine. Often noticeable in ceilings and pantries.

Rats in the Ceiling?

This is one of the most common rodent problems in Southland homes. Ship rats (black rats) are excellent climbers and love roof voids — warm, dry, and undisturbed. The problem: they gnaw on wiring (a fire risk), ruin insulation, and their droppings can carry disease.

We place bait in the ceiling void where pets can't reach it, eliminate the colony, and show you where they're getting in so you can seal it. Don't ignore scratching in the roof — it gets worse, not better.

Rodent Control FAQs

How do I know if I have rats in the ceiling?+

The telltale signs are scratching or scurrying sounds at night, droppings in the ceiling space, gnaw marks on wiring or wood, and a musty smell. If you're hearing noises in the roof at night, it's almost certainly rodents — call us before they damage wiring or insulation.

Is rodent bait safe around my dog or cat?+

Yes, when applied by a professional. We use tamper-resistant bait stations that pets can't access, and we place them in locations pets don't reach. We'll advise on any precautions specific to your home and pets.

How long does it take to get rid of mice or rats?+

Most rodent problems are resolved within 1–2 weeks. Bait takes a few days to work as rodents need to feed on it repeatedly. For heavy infestations we may recommend a follow-up. We also identify and advise on sealing entry points to prevent re-infestation.

Can you stop them coming back?+

We identify likely entry points — gaps in eaves, vents, pipes, and foundations — and advise on sealing them. Ongoing bait stations around your property's perimeter are also available for homes with recurring rodent pressure.
